Help shape the streets of tomorrow and create better ways for people to move around their communities.
At Stantec, we're passionate about creating places that are better connected, more sustainable and designed around the people who use them.
We're looking for an enthusiastic Senior Transport Planner to join our growing team in Scotland, working on an exciting portfolio of integrated sustainable transport projects. From improving active travel and public transport provision to rethinking how our streets operate, you'll help develop solutions that make walking, wheeling, cycling and travelling by public transport safer, easier and more attractive.
Working across a diverse range of urban environments, you'll bring together strategic thinking, technical expertise and creative problem-solving to help transform how people move through the places they live and work.
Whether you're an established Senior Transport Planner or looking to take the next step in your career, this is an opportunity to make a tangible impact while continuing to develop your expertise.
ABOUT THE ROLE
You'll play an important role in developing sustainable transport schemes, from initial concepts through to design development, helping turn ambitious ideas into practical solutions for real-world challenges.
Working collaboratively with colleagues across transport planning and civil engineering, your responsibilities will include:
Designing for sustainable movement: Developing integrated transport schemes covering active travel, public transport and road safety, progressing projects through Stage 1 and Stage 2 design.
Finding opportunities for change: Analysing transport and traffic data alongside existing street layouts to identify barriers and opportunities for more sustainable movement within urban environments.
Creating better-connected places: Reviewing multimodal transport networks and identifying packages of interventions that prioritise different modes of transport along appropriate routes.
Shaping street design: Developing and appraising design options that support walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport, drawing on relevant national and local design standards.
Improving how streets work: Advising on street operations and access arrangements, including Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) relating to parking, loading and movement restrictions.
Bringing designs to life: Working closely with civil engineering colleagues to inform and support the development of practical, deliverable design solutions.
Engaging communities: Supporting stakeholder and public engagement, communicating technical proposals in a clear, accessible and engaging way.
Delivering quality outcomes: Preparing technical reports, business cases and supporting documentation to inform decision-making and project delivery.
YOUR IMPACT
- Help turn the ambition for more sustainable transport into streets and places that work better for everyone.
- The way our streets are designed influences how people travel, how communities connect and how accessible our towns and cities can be.
- Through your work, you'll help identify opportunities to reduce barriers to sustainable travel, improve public transport connectivity and create safer, more inclusive environments for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.
- You'll contribute to projects that balance the needs of different transport users within often challenging urban environments, helping clients make informed decisions and deliver meaningful improvements.
- Working alongside a multidisciplinary team, you'll see your ideas develop into practical solutions that support healthier communities, better-connected places and a more sustainable future.
ABOUT YOU
We're looking for someone with a passion for sustainable transport, an understanding of street design and the confidence to turn technical knowledge into practical solutions.
You'll ideally bring:
- Experience in transport planning, with a background in street design projects involving active travel, public transport or integrated sustainable transport.
- Experience developing or appraising design options within constrained urban environments.
- An understanding of relevant national and local design standards and their application to street design.
- Experience analysing transport or traffic data to inform design decisions and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Knowledge of street operations, access arrangements and traffic management measures, ideally including Traffic Regulation Orders.
- Strong report-writing and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to clients, stakeholders and the public.
- The ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across transport planning, civil engineering and other disciplines.
- Experience working on publicly funded projects involving active travel or public transport would be particularly beneficial. However, we'd also welcome candidates from the private sector who have contributed to concept design, understand relevant design standards and are keen to apply their experience to a growing portfolio of sustainable transport projects.
We're open to candidates already working at Senior Transport Planner level, as well as those looking to take the next step in their career and develop their expertise within a supportive, multidisciplinary team.
