The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Director to join our growing Transport Planning team in Birmingham, based at our Cherry Street office in the heart of the city.

Our Birmingham office brings together colleagues from across our multidisciplinary business, including transport, highways, infrastructure, planning and the wider built environment. You’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with specialists across these teams, build strong client relationships and draw on our wider expertise to deliver integrated solutions across the region.

This is an exciting opportunity for a senior transport planning professional who combines strong technical expertise with an established network across the private-sector development market.

You will work with a diverse range of clients, including developers, housebuilders, landowners, property investors and other private-sector organisations, providing strategic and technical transport planning advice across some of the region’s most significant development projects.

As a Director, you will have the opportunity to use your existing market relationships and reputation to develop new client relationships, generate opportunities and grow our Transport Planning business across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands.

We are looking for someone who is well connected, commercially minded and passionate about development and transport planning, with the credibility and experience to operate at a senior level with clients and influence project outcomes.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Director, you will provide strategic, technical and commercial leadership across a range of development planning projects, with a particular focus on the private sector and the West Midlands development market.

You will work closely with developers, housebuilders, landowners and other stakeholders to develop practical transport solutions that support successful development and sustainable growth.

Your role will include:

  • Providing senior technical and strategic leadership on complex transport planning and development projects.

  • Leading transport planning inputs for residential, mixed-use, commercial, employment and strategic land developments.

  • Advising clients from early-stage land promotion and feasibility through to planning applications and development delivery.

  • Providing strategic advice on transport strategy, accessibility, sustainable transport and development-related infrastructure.

  • Leading the preparation and review of Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans and wider transport strategies.

  • Supporting clients through planning applications, highway negotiations and engagement with relevant authorities.

  • Acting as a senior point of contact for key clients and developing long-term, trusted relationships.

  • Using your existing market connections and industry network to identify and generate new opportunities.

  • Leading business development activity, including client engagement, bids, tenders, fee proposals and presentations.

  • Identifying opportunities to grow existing client accounts and develop new relationships.

  • Representing Stantec at industry events, client meetings and within the wider development and transport planning market.

  • Working collaboratively with colleagues across planning, highways, infrastructure, environment and other disciplines.

  • Providing leadership, mentoring and development to transport planning professionals within the team.

  • Supporting the strategic growth and development of our Transport Planning business across Birmingham and the wider Midlands.

YOUR IMPACT

Your experience, technical credibility and market relationships will enable you to have a significant influence on both our projects and the continued growth of our business.

You will help clients navigate complex transport challenges and bring forward successful, sustainable and well-connected developments.

You will also play a leading role in strengthening our position within the private-sector development market by:

  • Developing and maintaining strong relationships with developers, housebuilders, landowners and property-sector clients.

  • Leveraging your existing network to generate new business opportunities.

  • Developing strategic client relationships and supporting account growth.

  • Identifying emerging opportunities across strategic land, residential, mixed-use, commercial and employment development.

  • Building relationships with key property and development stakeholders across the West Midlands.

  • Developing propositions and leading successful bids and tenders.

  • Representing Stantec and raising our profile within the regional market.

  • Contributing to our wider business strategy and growth plans.

  • Building our reputation for delivering high-quality, commercially focused transport planning advice.

This is a role where your technical expertise, client relationships, commercial awareness and ability to generate and grow business will be equally important.

ABOUT YOU

You will be an experienced transport planning professional with a strong track record of working within the UK development and private-sector market.

We are particularly interested in individuals who have:

  • Significant experience within transport planning consultancy, ideally at Director, Associate Director or equivalent senior level.

  • Strong technical experience across development planning and strategic land.

  • Experience working with developers, housebuilders, landowners, property investors or other private-sector clients.

  • A strong understanding of the planning and development process and the role transport plays in enabling successful development.

  • An established network of contacts across the development, property and transport planning market, particularly across Birmingham and the wider Midlands.

  • Demonstrable experience of client relationship management and business development.

  • A strong track record of generating opportunities, winning work and developing client accounts.

  • The ability to identify market opportunities and turn relationships into successful projects.

  • Strong commercial awareness and an understanding of how to grow and develop a consultancy business.

  • The credibility and confidence to engage with senior clients, developers and stakeholders.

  • Excellent communication, influencing and negotiation skills.

  • Experience of leading, mentoring and developing technical teams.

  • The ambition to play a visible role in growing our Transport Planning capability and market presence.

A relevant degree and/or professional qualification, such as CIHT, would be desirable.
